When Tears leave Scars.
Chapters One and Two
Chapter One
I briskly walked down the poorly populated streets of our neighborhood. Genetically modified grass on people's yards slightly blew in the wind as I walked by. My bag weighted me down making me slower than I wanted to be, but it wasn't to much of a bother noting that I was walking as fast as I could. The light breeze ruffled my hair, slightly knocking my perfectly placed ponytail out of its place. Where I was going seemed forever away, but the anxiety seemed to be getting closer with every step.
Once I finally reached the end of my walk, it seemed like my bag had gained another 5 pounds, when it only had a water bottle, my phone, a folder with documents, pens, and other little things inside of it. I looked up at a pair of doors that were twice the size of myself. I noticed tiny speakers on either side of them that were invisible at first glance. As I stepped closer to the doors I could start to piece together something that sort of looked like a lens in the middle of the two. It looked me in the eye giving me a sense of cautiousness. I waited there for a moment, glancing around at my surroundings. “Hello” said a high pitched voice coming from the speakers.
“Um, Hi” I said unsure of what was going on. I liked it when it was silent. I had time to think, and I didn't have to worry about saying the wrong thing, but doing this I had to get ready for what was coming to me.
“Please state your name and date of birth.” the voice said smoothly.
“ Rae Febusher. August 13, 3024.” There was an awkward silence for a few second, then the voice spoke again.
“Thank you for your patience, you may now open the door. Have a nice day”
”OK. You too I guess” I said, unsure.
I slowly twisted the door knob and it easily opened. There was a long dark hallway in front of the door. You could barely see any light at the end. As I stepped through the doorway a silhouette appeared and slowly began to walk towards me. I stood there in fright not knowing what was going on. Until the figure came closer. It was a woman, maybe a few inches shorter than me. Her brown hair seemed wet and was tightly pulled back in a tiny bun, she was wearing a coral body con dress that looked like a size too small for her. She held a clipboard to heavy for her to carry and she held something else behind her back.
“ Um hello” I said, trying to get a quick conversation out of her. I waited a bit for a response, but she didn’t. She just messed with the thing behind her back, so I tried again.
“Hello” I said with a little bit more confidence.
“ Um may I get by please, I’m trying to get to the secretary interview.”I said a little quieter.
She just stood there, letting each word that I decided to speak just bounce off of her face. I wanted to be brave and squeeze by her, but she gave me an intimidating glare that turned that option into a no.
Then I decided to take a leap of faith, something that is pretty easy for others when they’re in the right situation. My heart started to race as she gave that same glare that she did earlier. I unhooked my bag, and took my water bottle out. I closed my eyes and quickly took a sip. Then all of a sudden a sharp pain surged through my stomach. The pain sent me falling to the ground, dropping my water bottle and spilling the water all around the floor. I wanted to scream but I also didn’t want attention drawn to us. I held in the pain as the woman tied a blindfold around my eyes. "What the hell is going on?" I thought as my body got lifted off the floor and carried down the dark hall way.
Chapter two
The woman finally let me down after what felt like an hour. The pain seemed to be gone but my stomach still tingled. She took off the blindfold only to reveal to me that I was sitting on a bench next to two other people that looked as confused as I was. There was a girl on my right sitting with her hands in her lap, and a sheer look of awe. She seemed about the same age as me. She had rustled blonde hair that rest right above her shoulders and a white, silky blouse was wrinkled ever so slightly. On my left there was a boy hunched over, head to knees, he looked as though he was asleep. He had dark brown hair in a somewhat buzzed haircut and was wearing a blue and white striped button down.
As the older woman walked out of the room, the girl gave me a quick glance and then started to piece together a greeting.
"Well Hi, um, great first impression for a new potential work place, right,” she said awkwardly, trying to lighten up the mood.
She seemed a bit unsure of her wording as she blinked and turned the other way. I wanted to say something nice like “ Hello, I’m Rae” but the opportunity passed me, as somebody entered the room. The same woman was back again holding a young girl maybe in her teens. The woman dropped her in the a chair next to the young boy sleeping. Her head hit the back of the wall, and the sound woke up the boy in between her and me.
“ Are you ok” I asked hesitantly towards the new girl. She waited a bit to observe her surroundings.
“Did the same thing happen to you guys?”she asked with unesaly.
Nobody answered, we all just sat and looked at her. She looked so young. Her face was turning red, but at the same time she looked like she just saw a ghost. She had dark red hair braided down her elbows, and her eyes twitched every other blick. She looked like mess.
We all sat in silence waiting for an answer telling us why we were there. The suspense of the silence and wonder of who will enter or exit was killing all of us. As we waited for something to happen, a ticking sound started coming from the wall in which we were facing. The wall was a light beige with a darker beige outline in a shape of a door in the middle of it. I stared at the outline thinking that something would happen, but nothing happened just like I knew it would all along.
The ticking slowly got louder and louder the more we waited in silence, till finally the outline of a door moved slightly, then opened to reveal a man, maybe in his late thirties, standing in front of a foggy glass door.
“Alice, Jay please follow me,” the man said in a warm toned voice.
Alice got up, her arms and legs shook as she slowly walked towards the man. Once she got there the man put his arm on her shoulders and let her through the glass door.
